A 19th-century single-storey stone barn in Chillington has been put up for sale for more than £400,000.

The property, named Field Barn, is set in about 1.4 acres of pastureland and paddock, with a further 1.6 acres available by separate negotiation.

It has an asking price of £425,000.

Planning permission is in place to convert and extend the property into a three-bedroom, 1,500 sq ft home with a lower-ground kitchen/breakfast area.

"This is an exciting opportunity to acquire a period barn with full planning permission to convert into a fine home standing amidst gardens and grounds of approximately 1.4 acres located in the popular and accessible village of Chillington," estate agents Marchand Petit, who are handling the sale, said.

According to Marchand Petit, a good-quality conversion would set you back around £200,000, and that the property could sell on for about £700,000.

The village of Chillington, which is four miles from Kingsbridge and about 10 miles from Dartmouth, has its own few shops, post office, health centre and a pub.

For further information or to book a viewing, call Marchand Petit (Kingsbridge) on 01548 857588.

Property is at a premium in the village, with many homes unaffordable for the local population.

The average cost of a house in the South Hams is nearly £300,000, while local workers earn an average salary of just £15,000.
